FAQ's

What type of wax is used in HUTWOODS candles?

We use a premium blend of 100% natural soy and coconut wax, specifically formulated for candles. It is composed of non-petroleum renewable resources and derived from natural coconut and soybean oil. Biodegradable, free from pesticides and herbicides, kosher certified and also free from any Genetically Modified Material. Our wax is not tested on any animals and is manufactured meeting FDA standards.

Why choose Soy-Coco Wax?

HUTWOODS soy and coconut wax candles are made with 100% natural coconut blended with soya beans, which are non-toxic and far better for the environment. This wax burns clean, with 95% less soot than paraffin candles and also cooler at a temperature of only 54°C (paraffin is a dangerous 63°C). Soy and coconut candles also produce less smoke, less soot and are less toxic than normal candles. Another benefit is that the wax be easily cleaned up in hot soapy water.

What kind of wick is used in HUTWOODS candles?

We use natural wood wicks in all HUTWOODS candles. These wicks create a unique soft crackling noise reminiscent of a log fire. Other benefits include a cleaner burn with no carbon buildup and little debris. They also offer a longer burn time, maximizing the life of your HUTWOODS candle.

How do I care for my HUTWOODS candle?

When lighting your soy candle for the first time, allow the wax to melt all the way to the sides of the jar. This will ensure a consistent burn and will avoid any tunnelling of the wax.

It is also important to always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before relighting each time. This can be done by simply pinching off any black, used wick and lighting the fresh wood underneath. If the wick is too long, the flame may have difficulty staying lit. The recommended maximum burn time of a HUTWOODS candle is 4 hours.

For added safety, ensure the flame is extinguished as the wick nears the base of the jar or as the wax is close to being completely melted.

How can I burn my HUTWOODS candle safely?

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Don’t place a burning candle near clothing, books, curtains or anything flammable. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Place a HUTWOODS candle on a stable and heat-resistant surface. Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart from one another. Please refer to our safety sticker on the bottom of each candle for further information.

How do I store my HUTWOODS candle?

Always remember to store your HUTWOODS candle in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.

How do I remove spilt wax?

Allow the wax to completely harden and then remove any larger pieces of wax. Being 100% natural and biodegradable, our wax is water soluble and therefore very easily cleaned with hot soapy water.

Is my HUTWOODS jar re-useable?

Absolutely! We encourage you to re-cycle. Once you have finished burning your HUTWOODS candle, the glass jar that is left behind can be reused. After the wax is completely removed (simply with warm soapy water), these jars are a unique way to store everyday items including make-up brushes, cotton wool, or as a vase for flowers etc.

My HUTWOODS candle has surface imperfections. Is this normal?

During temperature changes, soy wax will sometimes release excess oil. This often happens after shipping across the country and is known as ‘sweating’. This will not affect the candle, nor usually reappear after the initial burn. To remove the oil, use a paper towel to gently wipe it clean.

HUTWOODS candles are all hand poured and not massed produced. Although every effort is made to ensure consistency, each candle is unique. When using natural soy wax, sometimes you may notice darker patches or wet spots in your container. This is not a fault of the candle – simply a characteristic of natural soy wax where the wax has not 100% adhered to the glass. This does not affect the candle in any way. It’s how you know it’s completely natural soy wax.

Can I really use the seeded paper to grow a herb?

Yes, absolutely! We wanted a creative way for our customers to be able re-cycle and re-use our luxury range of silver, matte black and brass jars. Every one of these candles come with a layer of protective seeded herb paper with 4 different herb options; Basil, Oregano, Parsley and Thyme.
